Abstract
Seventy-five patients (ninety cases) of Osgood-Schlatter disease were treated surgically at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Capital Armed Forces General Hospital during the 3 years period from January 1979 to December 1981.
The surgical procedures used consisted in 1) removal of loose fragments, 18 cases, 2) complete subperiosteal excision of tubercle with removal of fragment, 72 cases.
The operative approach was through a longitudinal skin incision, 66 cases, or a trans¡þverse skin incision, 24 cases.
The results were as follows;
1. The most common cause of pain was due to excessive activity of the knee.
2. The frequency of bilateral involvement was 20% (15 patients) .
3. Of all 90 cases, 41 cases were right and 49 cases were left.
4. Removal of the tubercle is preferable in the operative treatment.
5. When the operative approach was through a longitudinal skin incision, mild pain and tenderness on the operation site were present; 4 cases (30%) in 13 cases (removal of loose fragment), 3 cases (6%) in 53 cases (complete subperiosteal excision of tubercle with removal of fragment).
